MUSIC AUDITION PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS

FORMAT OF THE AUDITION For admission to the music programs at Eastern Mediterranean University, candidates should request an audition. The format of the auditions is as follows: Prospective Performance Students Performance ( / 60%) Two contrasting pieces are to be performed on the candidates first instrument. ![]() A promising guitar student, Kıvanç Yılmaz is practicing his guitar. The requirements for each instrument for 2006-2007 academic year are Guitar: Two contrasting pieces. Piano: Two contrasting pieces, a total of 6 minutes in duration. Voice: One antique aria and one Lied (in German, Turkish, Italian or French). Flute: Two contrasting pieces. Violin: Two contrasting pieces. Cello: Two contrasting pieces.
Prospective composition students
Composition ( / 60%)
Composition candidates must submit two compositions in the form of scores, recordings or a performance in the audition. If scores or recordings are to be submitted, these should be sent to the Secretary of the Department of Music at least one week before the audition.
Prospective music education students
Performance ( / 60%)
1. Singing of a prepared song (e.g. school song, folk song etc.). 2. Performance of a work on the candidates first instrument.
All candidates take the following tests:
Aural skills ( / 15%) (i) Repetition of a melody. The student will be played a short melody on the keyboard and s/he is required to sing it back. (ii) Singing notes played simultaneously. The student will be played 2, 3 or 4 notes simultaneously and asked to sing the individual notes. (iii) Repetition of a rhythm. The student will be played a short rhythm and asked to repeat it.
Sight-reading ( / 10%)
All students are required to play from sight a short passage on their first instrument.
Keyboard Test
This test is not included as part of the assessment of the candidates suitability for study in the Department of Music; rather, its purpose is diagnostic.
Interview ( / 15%)
The applicant may be asked questions about his/her education, musical background and interests.

Guidelines for students
Candidates should state at the audition their first and second preference for study (i.e. performance, composition or music education).
Should a student wish to have an accompanist in his/her audition, s/he should either (i) arrange the accompanist by himself/herself and inform the Department of Music beforehand or (ii) request an accompanist from the department to be available. If he/she chooses the latter, they are asked to submit the score/s to the Secretary of the Department of Music at least one week in advance of the auditions.
If accepted into the program, students may express a preference to study with a particular instructor. However, the Department of Music reserves the right to assign students to instructors.
