• SLOBODAN ILIC, Assoc. Prof. Dr.

Slobodan Ilic received his PhD from Bamberg University, Germany. Prior to joining EMU, he taught at Bilkent University, Ankara. His primary fields of research are intellectual and religious history of the early Ottoman Empire, with particular emphasis on heterodox sufism and heretical movements in the Ottoman Balkans and Anatolia from the 15th to the 17th century. Prof. Ilic chaired two masters thesis. He participated in more than 20 international conferences. He authored a book published by the prestigious Otto Harrassowitz (Wiesbaden 1999) and numerous articles in international journals.

• JAN ASMUSSEN, Assist. Prof. Dr.

Jan Asmussen is from Germany. He was educated at Kiel, Copenhagen and Hamburg Universities. He is the author of “Wir waren wie Brüder”. Zusammenleben und Konfliktentstehung in ethnisch gemischten Dörfern auf Zypern. [“We were like brothers”. Coexistence and the upcoming of Conflict in ethnical mixed villages in Cyprus] and is currently working on modern history of Cyprus.

Gül Barkay is from Turkey. She was educated at Bogaziçi University and Dokuz Eylül University. She is the author of ABD Diplomasisinde Türkiye 1940-1943 (Büke Yayincilik, 2002) and is currently working on prosopographical research on Turkish diplomats.

• ÖZLEM ÇAYKENT, Assist. Prof. Dr. (Department Chair)

Özlem Çaykent was educated at Bogaziçi University and Bilkent University. Her research interests ranges from Scottisch Enlightenment, historical novel to historiography. Her PhD thesis was “The History of John Galt: Past and Present in the Wake of Enlightenment” and is currently working on the development of the term “feudal system”. She has been working at EMU since Fall 2003 and teaches European History, Historiography and Methodology courses.
