History at EMU
The Department of History offers
a four-year undergraduate program prepared in accordance
with the latest developments in historiography. The program
provides comprehensive education in Turkish and European
history, preparing students for professional careers or
graduate study programs. Strong emphasis is given to Ottoman
history and paleography and to the courses in the methodology
of history; however, courses concerned with various periods
of world and European history are also included in the curriculum.
Another strength is the study of the history of Cyprus and
the Eastern Mediterranean. The language of education is English
and Ottoman Turkish is taught as a source language. In addition
to the more specialized courses offered by department staff,
EMU history students enroll in a wide range of general education
and elective courses offered by other departments. Through
the non-credit SPIKE program, students are encouraged to
attend rich cultural offerings both on and off campus.
The study of history at EMU
is not confined simply to presenting facts but extends to
searching for an interpretation and evaluation of past events.
The analysis and interpretation of history provide an essential
context for evaluating contemporary institutions, politics,
and cultures. The B.A. program in history prepares students
for careers in teaching, law, museum work, the media, public
relations, governmental and non-governmental organizations,
publishing, community affairs, and business, among other
fields. They are also qualified to take graduate courses
at EMU and other educational institutions.
