The objectives of the Department of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are to promote all aspects of the Arts, Humanities, and Cultural Studies as the necessary basis of a holistic, liberal education. To this end the department, rooted in a tradition of the Arts and Social Sciences, offers university elective courses in a wide spectrum ranging from art, philosophy of art and aesthetics (art history, literature, music) to history and the cultural heritage of the Eastern Mediterranean as well as European and world history. Moreover, the interdisciplinary and intercultural nature of the Department focuses on education as a collaborative and dynamic enterprise between diverse bodies of knowledge and systems of thought, as well as the multicultural dimension of our present world. Overall, the objectives of the Department of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are to encourage students to be socially aware, intellectual individuals who are capable of making independent, balanced and just assessments of themselves and their wider communities.
