Carl Friedrich Gauss referred to mathematics as “the Queen of the Sciences”. Explicitly or implicitly, mathematics is valid in almost every area of human activity, including science, engineering, economy, industry, communication, art etc. The language of mathematics is universal for communicating ideas, articulating theoretical concepts, organizing and analyzing data, modeling and projecting trends. Indeed, every mathematical theory is applicable to reality. Some of them are already in use, forming the scope of applied mathematics; others exist theoretically, awaiting novel application areas. Computer assisted numerical analysis, logic and statistics are integral parts of every complex application of mathematics, requiring specialized skills and training in mathematics and computer science.
The Department of Mathematics was established as one of the first departments shortly after the foundation of the EMU. At the beginning its mission was just to provide service courses in Mathematics and Computer Science. Over the past 25 years the Department of Mathematics has been evolving to one of the biggest and most international departments of EMU, hosting one undergraduate program in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, and five graduate programs, both MS and PhD, in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, and Information Systems. The Department of Mathematics has become one of the scholarly most competitive Mathematics Departments in the Turkish-Speaking region and the Middle East.
“To advance knowledge and to educate students in mathematics and computer science which will best serve the country and the world through achievements in teaching, research and community services that are of international standards, ’comparable to the highest in world leading universities.” This is the mission of Department of Mathematics.
